The book was amazing, and so was the cinematic adaptation. From begining to end, the story keeps the same atmosphere as if reading it for the first time. Even though the subject is dark, the smooth flow of the movie lightens the load. A must see!!!

Sofia Coppola did a good job directing, and the Air soundtrack is amazing, but otherwise this movie was awful. It had no real plotline and no overall point. I honestly think the only reason anyone would like this movie is so that they could feel 'artsy.' But it was produced by Paramount, not even an independent company, and besides it was stupid.

It's a great movie!!! It shows people how it could be in a family of girls and strict mothers! And also tells you many other things.

I personally don't see what you people out there found so confusing about the storyline to this movie? I personally think that the reason Kirsten Dunst's character turned to the life she did was only because she was tired of mommy and daddy's rules so she rebelled... soon the others saw the point so they all committed suicide... what's not to get?

Not quite sure what the point of the story was. Weird, depressing and confusing.

The movie was beautiful; it was equal parts dreamy and haunting. The actors' performances were stellar, as was the direction by Coppola.

Good film, good acting, good picture. But it's addressed to young girls from 10 to 14. So guys that love FF Coppola and thought the trailer seemed cool, beware of this crap.

This movie should not be missed! James Woods gives a great performance as the father. And even Kirsten Dunst, who has a less than spectacular acting past, pulls off an excellent character. The movie offers a lot of laughs, as well as many sad moments. The pacing is slower than most movies today, so if you're the type with no patience, you may want to overlook this one. However, if you consider yourself a real movie lover I would not miss this.

Thought the movie was fabulous - definitely not for fans of mainstream hollywood movies - it had the same feel as Blue Velvet. It just proved that no one knows what goes on behind closed doors!

This movie was very touching, but it was not for everyone. It's far from being an Hollywood movie. I think it succeeded in what it was meant to show us, if you look closely. Very good start for Coppola.

Unfortunately, I read the other critics before writing mine... This movie was a strong powerful debut for Sophia Coppola, and some people found it a waste of time and money, or just got bored... I agree this movie is more for movie lovers, so I guess those who wrote those revues just shouldn't write for this column. This movie clearly states how a Coppola boldly makes it on her own in the movies

Nice to see that this movie was not done by a big Hollywood studio. It's real. It has atmosphere (The Air Soundtrack is even better after seeing the movie). Great job Coppola.

Ms. Coppola certainly learned from her father. Great cinematography! The film gives you the complete sense of the mid-seventies. The narration and music added to the feel of the time. No flashbacks - which is a relief. So many filmakers use flashbacks as a cheap trick to arouse (and confuse) their audiences. The story flowed along effortlessly. Not a fluffy girly film. Great stuff!
