A little slow to begin with, but it picked up after a while.

I finally saw this one on the tube tonight. I thought it was excellent. Not sure why some felt it was so bad? This one had some great action and kept me from changing the channel. Good old Gangster "Shoot 'em up" movie. Bratta Tat Tat...

This movie simply didn't live up to the hype. The ensemble was not put together in an interesting fashion (including the cast, music, story etc...) I lost interest half way into the movie and for that I give it a 4.

This movie is a huge letdown. I'm a fan of gangster/drama movies but this one is just not my cup of tea. The movie (story/screenplay/directing) was so bad, I couldn't care less for the fate of the main protagonists in general and the love subplot in particular. In fact, while watching, I just wished that the authorities capture/kill Dillinger and his boys and be done with those smug and annoying gangsters so much they, especially Dillinger/Johnny Depp, were getting on my nerves. Did I say the plot was RETARDED; and it's mainly due to the cops being just total idiots -- it seems none of them has an IQ greater than 20. I think that's what make me hate this movie so much. It is meant to be a serious gangster drama but it should have been a comedy instead how easy the cops get fooled -- countless times Dillinger just gets away under their nose, it's sickening. Anyway, this movie is just a sad work and waste of good actors.

I personally hated it. Only watched it for its actors. Besides the acting, everything else basically sucked, very badly. One of the most boring i've seen in a very long time. Very disappointing and won't recommend this to anyone... It's so bad that I have to write a review to say how bad it is.

HONESTLY... a complete waste of 11$ dollars. I can't believe I paid full price to see this movie. I actually walked out on the movie about 2 hours into it, and I NEVER EVER walk out on movies. I was quite literally falling asleep. I love Johnny Depp and thought this movie looked good and had good reviews, that could not be further from the truth. The movie just draged on and on and on, it had no real plot, action, comedy or love. I was not even interrested or sad that I didn not see the end of the movie. I kept waiting to see if it would get better, it however DID NOT. If you really want to see it wait for the dvd... if not don't bother.

I found that the person recording the movie should have zoomed out with the camera. I was actually getting sick from all the motion of the close-up shots.

First off, let me say that there were many good points to this film. The set design was beautiful, the costumes were stunning, and the acting was quite good so the blame really doesn't rest there. Cotillard, Depp, and Bale were all excellent. Billy Crudup was fantastic as Hoover. However, the poor script was a problem, as was the the horrific cinematography, and the terrible direction. Sound quality was one of the worst in a film I have seen in ages - dialogue was muddy and incoherent, and sfx were far too loud. Lines that should have been ADR'd were obviously not, and you could see evidence that Michael Mann had overridden his sound engineer during the final mix to make punches of music and specific words and adding in dead silence where music ends too abruptly before a scene change. The handheld approach to most of the filming did not suit this type of picture, and the use of HD made most of it feel grainy rather than crisp. The inconsistent use of special effects was also annoying - as rather than appear realistic the gunshot final blows conjured up images of the Terminator franchise rather than the 1930's. All in all, a terrible effort by a director obviously incapable of this sort of story-telling. And like many other reviewers, I too found it difficult to stay awake through its unedited length which plays far too long... Avoid at all costs.

Good movie, a lot better then the reviews say it is. Lots of action, good performances by Bale & Depp. Clean movie, no sexual stuff, good language... Go See It!

Johnny Depp is amazing to watch in any film. This film was slower moving in comparison to the "Fugitive" type movies, but that's what makes it a better film. It's about character development, not merely a sequence of one daredevil stunt after the other.

I expected a lot more from Depp and Bale. I was kinda disappointed with the lack of action in the movie. It had so much potential, but it just wasn't executed very well.

A movie devoid of emotional content. Pretty sets and pretty actors do not a good movie make. I have never seen a Hollywood picture so devoid of drama or comedy before. Powerhouse actors giving cookie cutter performances. A long feel that feels longer, and when the "action" comes, it's just a badly choreographed fire-fight. It fails as a Oscar contending drama, it fails as a summer popcorn movie. It just fails.

The jailbreaks, shootouts, and bank robberies are great. But without Johnny Depp's amazing acting and Michael Mann's fabulous direction, this movie is a major dissapointment and shipwreck. Writers Ronan Ennett and Ann Biderman are two very unskillfull writers who have no clue what they are writing. Public Enemies is a character movie like "Heat" or "The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford", and since there isn't any character build-up or relationship building, this movie is incredibly weak and boring.

The film's qualities are far outweighed by it's shortcommings. Qualities: top notch acting, great sets and costume. Faults: weak dialogue, far too long for the content of the screenplay which was also lacking (regardless), cinematography/photography was so-so (I don't mind digital photography but this wasn't done consistently enough to give a cohesive and meaningful esthetic to the film) See it, but wait for rental.

Awesome movie, fight scenes are a bit repetitive but really worth watching. Not to much of a love story, a bit of talking lots of shooting.

Had high expectations, but was somewhat disappointed. Cinematography was so-so - bouncing camera views that were intended (I guess) to give the impression of chaos, but were mostly annoying. Depp is great, as usual, but other performances were lacklustre. I felt it was a little too slow, and I love good drama. A so-so movie, but wait for the DVD.

Half of it was filmed in the almost dark so you couldnt figure out who was who and doing what. It didnt tie together, it is an insult to to your intelligence really. This film was thrown together so they could star Johnny Depp, he is great but even he couldn't help this film.

The movie was very long, which would have been okay had it been more interesting. I had no idea what was going on during the shootouts, as I found most of the characters looked the same. Furthermore, esthetically (camera angles, lighting, acting, etc.), it seemed very poorly done. Considering the real life events, this movie had the potential to be great.

This movie is not Michael Mann's best work, but it is an entertaining and enthralling piece, nonetheless. Depp and Bale are wonderful in their roles, especially seeing as how they both show no signs of channeling Jack Sparrow nor The Dark Knight, respectively. Billy Crudup is fantastic and steals the movie with his performance as J. Edgar Hoover. The film's pace is steady and the action sequences are phenomenal - there is a shoot-out scene sans music that is reminiscent of the shoot-out scene in Heat, easily Mann's magnus opus. Out of all the movies that have come out this summer, this one is actually worth paying for!

This movie lacked content. Would have liked to see some planing before a robbery. The story line sucked. If it was not for Johny Depp I would have given it a big 0.

When I first heard of this movie... I thought gun fights and action... if you like a good cat and dog chase movie.. this movie is tht... but it was long, and a little confusing because the actors look the same... Depp and Bale perform great in this movie. This movie didnt dissapoint me... it met my expectations... and it was a good story... but long.

I would give 10/10 for the director and the production also for the picture. That was a great role for Johnny Depp, he was intense and believable as usual. But too much gun shot and not enough story and marillon Cotillard was not really good, (the last scene when she cried, she didn't seen into it!) The story of John Gallinger was not exploited enough I would have like to get to know him more personally, his childhood perhaps. The movie is mostly about all his crimes which is redundant because he always did bank robery's the same way with little variance.

This movie was incredible. Those who understand what a good movie is will enjoy this one. Johnny Deep's character was amazing, and I believe his character was good-hearted, even if he committed many robberies. Excellent movie - A must see.

I can't believe this movie is only getting a 6.4 on a 10! Could be because of it's lenght... I admit at one point I thought the movie was over... and I wouldnt have been sad if it were... it is kinda long, but a long time of good acting is not a terrible thing... The best scene, in my opinion..."What's the score? " and walked away... gave me chills!
