The people in Hollywood seem to think the average movie goer is a moron. If you go by this movie the US Civil War must have been fought in Afghanistan as it took the Hero what seemed like years and years to return from it. I kept hoping he'd die somewhere along the way so the movie could end, but alas it was not to be, we had to wait till the very end of a gruelling boring movie for that to happen. It's movies like this that beg the question why? Why? Why? Why bother making this movie?

This movie was lame. Too bad because the English Patient was a masterpiece. Very violent - unnecessarily, the scene when Jude Law and Nicole Kidman finally have one night together is laughable and Rene Zelwegger's role is just a lame caricature.

I saw this movie a while ago and it is a pretty scenic movie. I am suprised that it did not win Best Picture (Oscars) The tale is obviously romantic and tragic but that is the truth of war. Innocent people died, war profiteering took place (it continues to this day), families were torn apart by idealogy, tortuous acts commited by both sides on civilians and women. Keep in mind that this was a period before the Geneva convention, which stated the rules of war. (Not that Geneva convention matters to rouge nations in present day wars) The one thing I would point out about the title is that "Cold Mountain" was pretty "warm" when it came to Law and Kidman on their final night togethor. Great movie.

I put off seeing this movie in the theater and waited to see it now... on dvd. I'm glad I did. I would have been a mess with tears had I watched it on the big screen. It was a tad slow moving in places but I appreciated the intense details and little things that might go unnoticed by most but made up for being a great movie. It had a wonderful romantic but sad story line to it. I'm sure it gave a fairly realistic picture of what it was like back then... thank God we live in the time we do... (I think? ) It's not just a chick flick... it's a good all 'round movie.

I really liked the love story between Ada and Inman. It's hard to see the kinds of trials those people went through during the war. The lose of life is disturbing, it really makes me grateful for those people who fight to keep us safe and free.

Cold Mountain wonderfully directed by Anthony Minghella and wonderfully acted by Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zelwegger is a great movie that shows us that although the two main characters Ada and Inman were far away from each other, they managed to hold onto true love from the start to the end of the war. Great movie! See it now and you won't be disappointed! Guaranteed!

A very good movie. I don't know the last time I saw a romantic movie this good. Not that I ever go out of my way to see one. Great roles by Zellweger and Portman!

I found this movie would have been ok as a tv movie. Found myself wanting it to be over. Renee Zellweger's character was the best. She stole the movie. Ms. Zellweger is delightful actress. Thanks tho.

I had thought at first that the flash-backs and what-not were going to take away from the storyline, but it proved to be an excellent, edge-of-your-seat movie... my friend had to go to the bathroom, and ran as fast as she could to get back! (It was quite embarassing when she tripped down the aisle!!! ) A MUST SEE HIT!!!

This movie will keep you watching right to the end for sure. It portrays the civil war from another angle that might leave people feeling uncomfortable... the lawlessness within the ranks... the lies and reasoning people were dieing... just like any war today, the real reasons are not known to the average soldier. Aside from the war itself, this movie at any point does have some identity problems... the comedic releif is there to make you feel a bit better after watching some horrific-style moments whether through the story itself, or the violent and very real imagery portrayed on the screen... ill leave it at that. Good movie overall.

I've seen this movie twice already, and I plan to go again. It's inspiring and romantic in this best possible way. The emotions are subtle and the script is poetic. Very well done and Renee is at her best.

I heard so much negative and positive feedback about this movie, I went to see it myself to see what I and I alone thought. I was not disappointed... it had everything, pain, love, war, heartache, romance, comedy, beautiful scenery... and a great plot but with some graphic sexual parts that I didn't really think was needed in the film. The film carried itself well without that. I never took my eyes off the screen, it was visually and emotially compelling. I loved it and was glad I didn't let the negative things people said about it keep me from seeing it. Go and see it for yourself, you will be glad u did.

I think this film is classical american film. This film has got no different things and subjects. A lot of people are watching to this film for Nicole's perfect ass. We don't want to see the classical american war films. Because usa hasn't got history. Usa army has never made war. I am from turkey. Iam muslimand turkish human. And we wrote to history...

"Cold Mountain" is a horrible failure. The main problem is that the Kidman and Law characters are together for only a few minutes at the beginning of the movie. They hardly knew each other, so why should the movie-goer care if the two get back together again? In addition to this fundamental flaw there are several other problems: the main antagonist is just one step away from being a moustache-twirling caricature from a third-rate 1920's silent movie, the sceenplay is laughable, and the whole thing is made worse by the fact that the movie tries so hard to be "great". Natalie Portman and Philip Seymour Hoffman are the only redeeming qualities.

Blah. Sure some good acting, even though I thought Renaes role was a bit too overdone. Everything horrible and depressing that could happen does. I was just waiting for the next disaster to make me even more angry. Sick film couldn't wait for it to end with of course another predictable horrible event.

I found the movie very powerful. A look at the horrors of war. Not only with the battle sequences in the Civil War, but also the way the civilians and deserters were treated. Jude Law was very good, not one of Nicole Kidman's better performances, but she was competent. Zellweger was brilliant, she will win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Natalie Portman was excellent in a bit role. In fact, the whole cast (Giovanni Ribisis, Donald Sutherland, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and others) was strong.

Drama? Romance? War? Give me a break! Had I known Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger were attempting to turn this "movie" (more like a waste of time) into a "classic", I certainly wouldn't have wasted my time watching it. Do they really think they are of the status of actors such as Omar Shériff!? Thank God me and my buddy took the movie for what it really was: A COMEDY!..

I was surprised at what a good job was done by an Austrialian and an Englishman playing rural Americans. I thought they did a better job than Renee who is a rural American. Overall a really good movie: bittersweet, beautiful cinematography, good acting and a good plot. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

A movie of great performances by Jude Law, and Renée Zellweger, and a good performance by Nicole Kidman. Very well directed by Minghella. The cinematography was artistic. HOWEVER, the plot was just "OK". It was an interesting attempt to bring to the screen the reality of small town life during the civil war. It was also an interesting and tasteful attempt to mix brute reality with pristine romanticism. But the predictability of all the events that take place in the film really bothered me. Perhaps the critical acclaim the film had raised my expectations too much. Ultimately, I truly enjoyed watching the movie.

I hear it will be nominated for 7 academy awards. It seems to accurately depict the atmosphere during that time period. Its one of those movies that takes a more "realistic look " perhaps like saving private ryan did to replace films like the longest day. The thing is though, In the effort to make the film realistic, nobody ever stopped and asked, " do we really need to be doing this? ". There were parts in the movie that were so disgusting and graphic that it made me want to throw up. No human being with any amount of ethics can sit there and watch that total filth.

If not for those two this movie would have gotten a 3, and an early exit. Way too long, could have told this 2 1/2hr story in 45 mins twice as well.
